Sharon Abreu is organizing this year’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Day event that will take place at the church’s Parish Hall on Sunday, Jan. 15 from 3:00 until 4:30.
The event will feature screenings of two important speeches about peace, Dr. King’s speech “Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence delivered on April 4, 1967 and President John F. Kennedy’s commencement address at American University delivered on June 10, 1963, which has become known as his peace speech. (June 10, 2023 will mark the 60th anniversary of this speech.) Following the screenings, all attendees are invited to participate in a community discussion. And of course there will be some singing.
Face masks are strongly encouraged.
This event, co-sponsored by Emmanuel Episcopal Church and Irthlingz Arts-Based Environmental Education, is free and open to the public. Donations are welcome and will benefit the Orcas Island Food Bank and the Veterans for Peace Climate Crisis & Militarism Project.
